Universal Frequency to Digital Converter 

This Universal Frequency-to-Digital Converter (UFDC-1) is a fully digital CMOS integrated circuit based on novel patented methods for frequency, period, its ratio, duty-cycle and phase-shift measurements. By using this IC it is possible to build a variety of digital frequency or counter instruments, smart sensors and intelligent sensor systems.

The device represents a high resolution conversion for data acquisition systems designed to support all range of frequency-time domain and digital sensor applications. It offers high performance with good flexibility. Requires minimum possible number of external components

The UFDC-1 can be easy included into digital environment, controlled by an external microprocessor (slave mode) or work independently as a separate measuring unit without an external control (master mode). The function selection can be configured in both software and hardware.

The IC converts frequency-time domain signals into digital domain and provides interface to a microprocessor, DAQ or sensor system. Non-redundant conversion time.

The UFDC-1M-16 has a 32 times increased conversion speed over the UFDC-1.

Development board EVAL-UFDC

The EVAL-UFDC-1/UFDC-1M-16 evaluation board is a simple board for experiencing the Universal Frequency-to-Digital Converter performance. The  UFDC-1 and UFDC-1M-16 do not require any external components to design sensors system.

This 2-channel Evaluation Board allows selection of the 16 frequency-time parameters measuring modes and one generation mode (for calibration purpose). Easy design of  various digital sensors and sensor systems including smart, self-adaptation and self-identification sensor.

All existing frequency, period, duty-cycle, time interval, pulse-width modulated, pulse number and phase-shift output sensors and transducers can be directly interfaced to the evaluation board.

TTL-compatible sensors outputs can be connected to the Evaluation Board to measure any output frequency-time parameters and test the sensor systems functions.

The EVAL-UFDC-1/UFDC-1M-16 evaluation board is supplied with free software. The evaluation board interfaces to any personal computer running Windows XP or later, via the serial RS232 or USB port.  When using the USB interface a  USB to Serial (9-pin) DB9 RS232 adapter cable is required.  

The results can be displayed with a a terminal programs for Windows, LabView or by using the supplied software. The demo kit includes a CD with Terminal V1.9B and the Evaluation Board Software V1.14. The software allows calibration of the converters and saves the calibration value  into the converter’s memory.
